Internet service providers (ISPs) have signed up for a voluntary code of practice which comes into force today (December 5th).

The code - created by industry watchdog Ofcom - aims to make ISPs provide a clearer picture at the point of sale on the kind of broadband speeds customers can expect.

Most of the UK's main ISPs have signed up, with 95 per cent of broadband customers now falling under the code.

Ofcom will now check ISPs practices to make sure that they adhere to the code.

"Ofcom welcomes the fact that so many ISPs have signed and now implemented the code of practice," said Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.

"Over 95 per cent of broadband customers are covered by the code which means that the vast majority of people should be confident about the advice they receive on broadband speeds."

The code contains a number of requirements, including that providers must give an accurate estimate of the speeds customers' lines can achieve and explain to them how they could potentially speed up their service by adjusting technical factors in the line at home.
