Broadband accounted for nearly 95 per cent of internet connections in the UK in September, according to the latest official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed the figure of 94.1 per cent, which was up from June's 92.8 per cent, after it collated the results from a survey of internet service providers (ISPs).

There was a yearly increase in broadband connections of 7.6 per cent, while in terms of quarters they were up by one per cent.

However, despite the broadband growth, there was a 0.4 per cent drop in the index of all types of connections between June and September, to 118.4, due to an 18.6 per cent fall in dial-up.

"The market share of broadband connections has been increasing since the index began in 2001, reflecting its continuing popularity, widespread availability and increasingly competitive connection packages," the ONS said in a statement.

Last week, a report by Point Topic revealed that the global number of broadband subscriptions had reached 400 million.
