The UK's broadband infrastructure must be improved soon, the according to a broadband advice website.

Edd Dawson, managing director of broadband.co.uk, explained that as the levels of media streaming usage have increased, average speeds across the UK have slowed.

While he admitted he could not tell "directly" if the findings meant there was a serious limitation on the network, he said there was a "huge way to go" in providing fast access to the whole country, citing the fact that many people live a large distance from their exchange and can "only dream of getting speeds anywhere near the 'average'.

"There is only so far that speeds over copper wire can be pushed, at some point a replacement is required," he explained.

"Fundamentally the UK needs to start moving to the next level soon."

Broadband.co.uk's speed test for the UK's connections in October found that the average speed in all tests was 3.325Mbps, the third month in a row where the speed has fallen.

It stood at 3.609Mbps in July.
