BT Openreach has announced that it will be trialling new fibre optic systems throughout various location in the UK beginning in 2009.

The telecommunications company will be offering its new Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) services to up to 30,000 customers, offering speeds of up to 40 Mb per second.

David Campbell, BT Openreach director of next generation access, remarked that detailed plans on a further should be available by 2010. If trials are successful, then a more full-scale role out could be on the cards.

The two operational exchanges for the trials will be located in London's Muswell Hill and Whitchurch in South Glamorgan.

Mr Campbell said: "We have a good mix of areas, allowing us to test our products in both urban and semi-rural environments.

"These two sites were chosen from a shortlist and we expect to announce detailed plans for the initial market deployment of the Openreach product in early 2010, again with full consultation with all interested parties."
