London should have blanket Wi-Fi internet coverage, according to the city's mayor, which would allow people to use VoIP phones all over the capital.

Boris Johnson was speaking to BBC London 94.9 and agreed that some people needed help getting online but thought the prime minister's vouchers for internet scheme was a "desperate bribe".

Instead, he favours complete coverage for London as a way of fostering internet use.

"What we need is a city where anywhere you go, you can log on, you can get on the web. They've done it in other parts of the world; why on earth can't we do it?

"Let's look at ways that we can improve the infrastructure in this city so that there's Wi-Fi access everywhere."

Stratford could become the first area of the capital to have Wi-Fi and access for VoIP phones, because Mr Johnson felt this, as the main 2012 Olympic site, would be an excellent place to start.
