Proposals which aim to promote competition and investment in super-fast broadband for the UK have been unveiled by Ofcom.

The watchdog believes that this new fibre-based technology will provide speeds for homes and businesses of up to 100mbps, far faster than the 8mbps maximum speed usually seen from existing copper wires.

According to Ofcom, the proposals have been designed to reduce obstacles to investment and foster competition to boost consumer choice, while ensuring consumers are protected and the move to fibre from copper is painless.

I am delighted that investment in fibre is already underway and other plans are taking shape," said Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive.

"Fibre networks are one of the most exciting developments in communications that the UK has ever seen.

"Ofcom's plan of action will encourage further investment while promoting and sustaining competition so we can all benefit."

The proposals include creating clear standards for wholesale products and allowing freedom of pricing where effective competition exists, so prices can reflect risk and provide a return on investment.
