VoIP may soon be used to transmit video as VoIP providers look for new ways to make their product stand out, according to an expert.

James Awad, of Octasic, writes on EE Times that adopting a VoIP solution is a "no-brainer" for businesses now, meaning VoIP providers need to look to the future to make their product better than the rest.

He believes that the deployment of VoIP infrastructure will make it easier to "switch on" video, so "enterprise and mobile systems can accommodate video streaming and video conferencing".

He writes: "From an architectural standpoint, using a combined voice and video product simplifies the overall system."

On top of this simplification, Mr Awad also believes there will be a substantial cost benefit to system designers.

The growth of VoIP solutions cited by Mr Awad is backed up by recent statistics from analyst company Point Topic, which found that they accounted for 56 per cent of broadband value added services revenues, which total $25.7 billion (£14.2 billion).
