The OMTP group of mobile operators has today announced a new initiative called BONDI which seeks to map out the future of mobile technology.

The group, which includes Vodafone and T-Mobile, wants to see new developments in the field of mobile applications, while ensuring that customer security is not sacrificed.

The mobile world has seen many new advances in recent years, including VoIP phones, and OMTP hopes BONDI will make sure the trend continues - but safely.

"Users have to be certain when they use the mobile web that their privacy is paramount," said OMTP's managing director, Tim Raby.

"The OMTP goal is to 'enable and protect' - to enable fantastic new services whilst at the same time protecting the user."

The news will be welcome as a report in The Times warns of a new security threat called Bluesnarfing, which exploits vulnerabilities in the Bluetooth technology in Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones.

The technique is a hacking procedure which allows malicious users to download information from other people's phones.
