A digital revolution is about to take in Dundee after the Scottish city unveiled plans for a new fibre-optic broadband network.

The high-speed technology, which can offer 100 Mbps connections, will be installed across local sewers by H2O Networks as part as part of an attempt to make Dundee an attractive location for businesses and residents.

The improved service, which has already been tested by the council and Dundee University, is expected to be available to 55,000 households in two years time.

Elfed Thomas, CEO of H2O, claimed that Dundee's existing broadband infrastructure is too antiquated to deliver the high-speed connections demanded by users.

He continued: "Our solution is a totally new network that does not try to connect old and new cables. With speeds in excess of 100 Mbps, it brings us right into the 21st Century and beyond."

Joe Morrow, convener of Dundee City Council's economic development committee, added that the move would help the city "gain competitive advantage and to keep the city at the forefront of the broadband economy".
