Inflight broadband set for take off

Investment on inflight broadband systems will rise significantly over the next five years, it has been claimed.

A new report from analyst firm MultiMedia Intelligence indicates that many airlines will attempt to lure passengers from their rivals by focusing on delivery of improved entertainment services.

The research suggests that Wi-Fi hotspot schemes could be adapted to meet the needs of inflight broadband, which are proving increasingly popular with long-haul travellers.

"Inflight broadband is entering a new era ... Several initiatives to re-launch inflight broadband have been under way, as industry players prepare to launch inflight service," remarked Amy Cravens, contributing analyst with MultiMedia Intelligence.

Emirates and Air France have recently tested inflight mobile services as they attempt to boost passenger levels in a struggling sector.

MultiMedia Intelligence estimates that the global in-flight broadband market will reach $6.6 million in 2008 before rapidly growing to $936 million in 2012.
