A growing number of firms are installing VoIP hardware as they strive to improve the efficiency and functionality of their telecommunications systems, according to an industry expert.

Eric Thomas, founder and CEO of FreedomVOICE, claims that Hosted PBX services offer better reliability and audio quality than indirect VoIP alternatives.

He said: "Many businesses are attracted to the savings and the capabilities offered by Hosted VoIP PBX services, such as connecting multiple remote offices on one PBX."

Restricting the number of connections can help to reduce lag and static that currently hinders many services.

Recent research by iLocus shows that the amount companies have invested on VoIP technology has rocketed over the last 12 months.

The study suggests that there was a 35 per cent rise in overall VoIP traffic last year, while the number of VoIP access server licenses sold globally increased by 67 per cent.

There are currently around 450,000 paying mobile VoIP subscribers worldwide. This is predicted to reach 2.4 million by the end of the year, before rising to 26.6 million in 2012.
