Bournemouth set for super-fast broadband via sewer network

A new fibre broadband network that can offer download speeds of up to 100Mbs will be rolled out across Bournemouth's sewer system.

The project, which follows a successful pilot scheme, is expected to be complete within two-and-a-half years and will eventually encompass over 88,000 households. The infrastructure will be installed by H2O Networks and is budgeted to cost around £30m.

H2O Networks managing director Elfred Thomas said: "This will be the world's largest single fibre deployment.

"It's not just a one off. We are working with our partners here and overseas to create more Fibre Cities."

Ofcom recently launched a consultation looking at how UK consumers can be given access to high-speed broadband.

The watchdog is looking into how existing infrastructure such as underground pipes, underground ducts and sewers could be used to upgrade the broadband network.

Internet service providers have been recently struggling to cope with soaring demand for high bandwidth services such as the BBC's iPlayer.
