Ofcom confirms UK's largest spectrum auctionPosted 2 years 4 months ago in: Broadband ![]() Telappliant News: 2008-04-07 Rate this article: This summer will see an auction for the largest sector of radio spectrum that has ever been sold, confirm Ofcom. The release of the spectrum is believed to boost competition in the broadband and wireless technology industry. The section under the hammer is referred to as 2.6Hz spectrum which includes 2010-2025 MHz and 2500-2690 MHz range. Ofcom states that this range is particularly efficient for broadband wireless services using 3G or Wi-Max technology. Philip Rutnam, spectrum policy expert, said: "The release of the 2.6 GHz radio spectrum will create opportunities for fresh innovation, new services and competition for the benefit of consumers in the UK." Purchasers will find they have flexibility with how the spectrum is utilised. The range will not be subject to rules regarding restriction of the spectrum to a specific technology. Ofcom aims to make a further 400 MHz of fast-speed spectrum available in the following few years to help breed competition and innovation.
