A Norfolk MP has called for the area's county council to work with internet service providers and regional development agencies to bring broadband access to homes in the area, reports say.

The Eastern Daily Press states that Norman Lamb has been given expert estimates that put the number of homes without broadband access in Norfolk at double the national average, or around one per cent of properties.

And he is calling on local authorities to get together with providers such as BT and inward investment bodies to follow the multi-agency approach that has seen broadband services brought to rural areas in Cornwall and Scotland.

The MP is already in dialogue with BT and according to the paper will shortly approach Norfolk county council and the East of England Development Agency about developing a collaborative approach to the problem.

"In this day and age people should not be discriminated against in this way, it is a very important principle," he said.

Norman Lamb is the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk.
