A new voice over internet protocol (VoIP) system from Quest will allow voice compression to utilise less bandwidth, it has emerged.

According to NetworkWorld, the VoIP provider has unveiled its latest OneFlex product suite this week and reports that the new service will include a host of new features which will increase the number of paths available for use.

It is reported that Thuy Ha, director of product management for Qwest, claims that the amount by which users could increase their VoIP traffic could be as much as double - or in some cases triple - the amount of bandwidth they usually have available.

She adds that this compression feature is not expected to create any additional cost for existing OneFlex customers, but notes that additional phone lines or updated equipment may be required to fully utilise the new technology.

The OneFlex service was originally made available by Qwest in 2004 and offers users unlimited local calls, an online service management service as well as caller ID, call waiting and three-way calling.
