Recent claims that voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology has underperformed in the market has been addressed by one expert.

According to Paul Kretkowski of voip-news.com a recent article in the International Herald Tribune suggested that VoIP providers were doing little to progress hosted telephony - but this is something that can easily be reversed.

Mr Kretkowski states that the industry has a number of things it can do to encourage adoption of VoIP solutions and states that the service will become more popular if providers can show how the system makes life easier for businesses.

He states that getting reliability up to PSTN's level is vital and that customers need to see that VoIP call quality is reliable as well as cost effective.

Increases in the availability of session initiation protocol will also help the industry and Mr Kretkowski encourages people to "lobby hardware and software makers relentlessly"

Focussing on areas of Wi-Fi density is crucial, he adds, as is "reminding consumers that VoIP is a way to get more out of what they're already paying for broadband".

A recent study from Vnunet suggested consumers were increasingly likely to scrutinise bandwidth speeds when looking for a broadband provider.
