Apple brings VoIP to iPhone

Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) application could be developed for the iPhone after computer firm Apple launched a new Software Development Kit for the device, reports say.

Technology blog Shiny Shiny reports that the kit could "re-revoluntionise" the way people use their iPhones and iPod Touch by enabling software developers to produce new applications for VoIP, instant messaging and Push email.

It says potential VoIP services would use Wi-Fi connections, allowing users to make free calls on their home connection or while they are in a wireless hot spot.

Instant messaging will become available through iChat while email services will be faster, as well as more secure, with the capability to remotely wipe devices.

Other new applications expected to be developed with the kit include multi-touch games, which make use of the iPhone's touch-screen functions. Developers including Electronic Arts and Sega are reportedly looking at producing titles for the device.

A recent report from ABI Research said the market for VoIP over Wi-Fi, or VoWi-Fi, is set to grow "significantly" over the next five years.
