Council calls for action on broadband "not spots"

An "urgent solution" is required from the Welsh Assembly to the problem of insufficient broadband provision in Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales, a council has reportedly said.

The Western Telegraphy says the county council's economic overview and scrutiny committee called to a "powerfully worded" document to be sent to the assembly asking it to ensure Pembrokeshire is not "left behind".

The newspaper says Kefin Wakefiled, the council's head of service, had earlier outlined the business, education and social benefits of broadband to committee members and warned that without investment in broadband infrastructure for the county, things would "only get worse".

Councillor Ken Jones said it was "unacceptable" that broadband provision had not been the agenda for a recent council meeting with deputy first minister for Wales Ieuan Wyn Jones (pictured).

Director of development Dr Steven Jones said he recognised the work the committee was doing on the issue but added that inadequate broadband provision was an issue for the whole of Wales.
