Peter Cox, the man behind one of the first commercial firewall software products, has launched a new company aimed at improving security for voice over internet protocol (VoIP).

According to reports, the company, UM Labs, already has a number of VoIP security gateways in development and it plans to start releasing the hardware later in the year.

Products will include devices to secure Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), instant messaging and video connections for mobile users, as well as gateways to control SIP for service providers and companies needing policy-based security.

UM Labs, which is reportedly funded by Cox himself, has developed through his VoIP security consultancy, Voipcode.org.

The company says it has been established to analyze and prevent security threats for VoIP and unified communication in a market that is "growing rapidly" and seeing more integration of messaging systems.

Peter Cox, who was described as a "VoIP super-expert" by IT site Techworld, has over 30 years' experience in IT, including 20 years working in internet protocol networking and security.
