Broadband customers could be missing out on faster connection speeds, improved service and greater savings because they are afraid of being tied into a lengthy contract, a new survey has found.

The report from comparison site BroadbandChoices says that with the new year savings drive underway, 69 per cent of respondents would change their broadband package if they got cheaper rates. A further 51 per cent would change if they were offered a faster connection.

However, 43 per cent had not switched because they were worried about being tied into a lengthy contract, while 35 per cent thought they would not be able to get the same features.

The findings come after a survey from media watchdog Ofcom found that one in four people were thinking about changing their broadband provider in 2008.

BroadbandChoices' product development director, Michael Phillips, said consumers should look into switching because of the potential benefits on offer.

"Moreover, if consumers shop around, it needn't mean entering into a punitive long-term
contract," he added.

The Ofcom survey found that 21 per cent of consumers have switched their internet service provider at least once.
