The SIPconnect Technical Recommendation has been ratified by an industry advocacy group for session initiation protocol (SIP), it has been reported.

The recommendation aims to introduce uniform standards and protocols for direct internet protocol (IP) peering between SIP-enabled providers of IP private branch exchange (PBX) systems and voice over internet protocol (VoIP), TMCnet reports.

The SIP Forum ratified the recommendation at the Internet Telephony & Conference Expo. The group exists to promote SIP, a protocol for setting up conferencing sessions, telephony and multimedia over the internet, to industry.

According to the chair of the SIP Forum's technical working group, Richard Shockey, the recommendation's adoption will lead to improved sound quality for VoIP and create a basis for the introduction of personalised applications.

A number of firms have recently implemented the recommendation through the SIPconnect Compliant Programme, which allows manufacturers, software developers and service providers to achieve SIP Forum accreditation.

Firms that have been certified by the forum can display the SIPconnect Compliant logo for their equipment and services. Among the companies recently approved to use the logo is Digium, the company founded by the creator of Asterisk open source software, Mark Spencer.
