Digium's open source Asterisk platform has been recognised as the IP PBX of the year by InfoWorld Tech Centre.

The annual awards pitch the best in communications and IT against each other under the scrutiny of the industry website's experts and reviewers.

Asterisk won out against its competitors for its ability to provide "considerable cost savings when compared with commercial alternatives," while being provided freely to anyone who wishes to download it through an open source licence.

"InfoWorld tests upwards of 200 IT products every year, and we see many, many good ones," said Doug Dineley, InfoWorld's Test Centre executive editor.

"Our Technology of the Year award winners represent not only the cream of the crop, but the best products in the most important product categories."

On receipt of the award, Mark Spencer, Asterisk and Digium's chief technology officer, paid tribute to its support community.

"Asterisk wouldn't be in a position to rival some of the biggest vendors of proprietary voice technology today if it weren't for the inherent strength of open source and dedication of the community of developers," he said.
