The UK is set to get its first commercial wireless broadband service in an initiative planning to cover the Milton Keynes area.

Using WiMax technology, the service will reportedly bring broadband connectivity into places where it has not been able to spread through wires.

"We have had great success with our trials of WiMax in the Milton Keynes area," said Mike Read, chief executive at wireless broadband provider Freedom4.

"We can also provide services in areas where traditional ADSL access is not feasible, giving residents and businesses a cost-effective alternative to access the latest in internet connectivity."

Improved access to wireless broadband boosts the potential for remote working among Milton Keynes residents.

Using the expanded broadband network, web users can send data, look up information and keep in touch with the office by using VoIP telephony solutions.

"Our aim is to make Milton Keynes the first WiMax-powered wireless internet city," said Steven Jewell, chief executive at ConnectMK, a partner firm in the project.
