UK consumers using traditional telephone services could be missing out on savings of up to 92 per cent on their bills by putting off a switch to VoIP, it has been suggested.

Half a million calls are made from the UK using VoIP services each year, according to telecoms industry regulatory Ofcom, but more people could be saving money a study by uSwitch.com suggests.

Research by the price comparison site found that international calls are where the largest savings can be found by using IP telephony, with major savings apparent on calls to popular locations such as the US, Ireland, Australia and Germany.

A uSwich.com statement said that calls to these countries can be "92 per cent cheaper than with the standard BT Option 1 making this the ideal solution for frequent callers".

"It's clear that VoIP is a great way to save money on calling abroad," said uSwitch.com's head of communications services, Steve Weller.

"Christmas is an expensive time of year and a few pounds here and there can really mount up - so if you have family or friends abroad that you wish to call, plan ahead and make sure you don't miss out on savings by not shopping around."
