Consumers hunting around for a broadband provider in the UK are most likely to choose BT, according to new figures.

The former telecoms monopoly has attracted some 178,000 new customers to its broadband offering over the past three months.

This has nudged the total subscribers to BT Broadband over the four million mark for the first time - nearly twice the size of Carphone Warehouse, its nearest competitor.

But despite the success, BT chief executive Ben Verwaayen is looking for even greater gains by providing the best service.

"The UK broadband market is probably the most aggressive in the world and we are doing OK in it," he said.

"Trying to be cheaper than the next guy is a short-term mug's game. We want to compete on value not price."

Although BT has proven popular among UK users, it may not necessarily offer the best choice for businesses or home VoIP users.

Choosing a broadband operator that provides a reliable connection for a decent price is ideal for use with IP telephony, as VoIP systems rely on a strong connection to the internet to provide clear and uninterrupted voice calls.
