UK firms ignoring Wi-Fi security advicePosted 4 years 5 months ago in: General VoIP ![]() Telappliant News: 2007-09-05 Rate this article: New research from the National Computing Centre (NCC) suggests that 40 per cent of UK firms are overlooking the need for protection of their wireless networks. The report also found that just 15 per cent of firms have implemented security measures for their VoiP traffic, in spite of recently publicised concerns over patchable bugs in the technology. Unsecured Wi-Fi networks can result in leaks of potentially sensitive information, as well as exposing firms to the danger of criminal activity being perpetrated by someone piggybacking on their connection. NCC managing director Stefan Foster says that running an unsecured Wi-Fi network is like locking the front door, but leaving the windows open. He added: "Fraudsters are increasingly targeting IT systems and the growing use of Wi-Fi is attracting their attention both inside and outside of the office environment." Even secure networks with WEP or WPA password protection can be vulnerable to experienced hackers, so administrators are being advised to change network keys regularly and consider implementing additional security measures. NCC's research revealed that the average IT department spends just 3.3 per cent of its total budget on security.
