New reports suggest that VoIP peering is on track to experience rapid growth in the coming future, according to J Arnold & Associates.

Research carried out by the group argues that many carriers are beginning to realise the full suite of benefits afforded by VoIP peering, with some peering all of their traffic.

The study found that on average, firms peer less than a quarter of their traffic using VoIP but is speculated that this is due for significant growth ahead. One expert, John Longo, vice president of marketing at NexTone, states as much.

"The survey confirms that VoIP peering continues to grow as carriers expand their numbers of peering partners and look to offer new services," he said.

It was also found that carriers that do peer VoIP traffic tend to offer expanded service coverage and as such are more competitive in general.

Datamonitor research states that the UK is lagging behind on VoIP uptake, with a third of firms carrying VoIP at present.
