Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) who choose to upgrade to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, can take advantage of a wide range of extra features, experts claim.

On top of the cost savings which can provide a return on investment in six months, VoIP services may include advanced software-based communications features such as audio conferencing, call recording and virtual receptions.

Tan Aksoy, chief executive officer of internet telephony firm Telappliant, said: "With VoIP you can have a virtual office anywhere in the world. As long as you have an internet connection, you can have…a 'virtual presence' wherever you are."

He added that "cost savings, flexibility, mobility and features are the main reasons now why SMBs are now going for this technology".

With more companies switching their telephony services to VoIP, Mr Aksoy believes that the technology is set to grow rapidly in the future.

He suggested that the trend of merging VoIP services with data systems was just one indication that it was here to stay, and added: "If it wasn't the future we wouldn't be in the business."
