BT makes VoIP local

BT has launched a new service for its small business customers that will allow them to use its voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service while keeping a local number.

Following feedback from its Business Total Broadband users, the telecoms giant said the move would help smaller firms maintain a local touch.

VoIP can help businesses cut costs and improve efficiency, making it an attractive proposition for small business with their tightly-controlled overheads.

BT hopes that the offer of local numbers, which small firms say are important for their own branding, will boost subscribers to its Total Broadband package.

"We know that people like to deal with local companies and feel more comfortable calling numbers with codes they’re familiar with," said Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business.

"By introducing geographic numbers, in addition to offering Business Total Broadband customers a free VoIP line, we’re enabling even the smallest businesses to take advantage of the cost savings and convenience of making calls over the internet, whilst still maintaining their local presence."

A number of traditional telecoms providers like BT have joined in with the roll-out of VoIP in order to protect themselves in the future.

By carrying voice calls over the internet, VoIP represents a threat to BT's landline business.

BT will charge customers an additional £2.99 per month for each geographical number.
