Estimations of the growth in use of VoIP services over mobile phones suggest that it will more than double over the next two years.

Although the current base level of mobile VoIP use is low, this means there is capacity for rapid growth, according to a study conducted by Rhetorik.

With providers working to increase the penetration of these services into the public consciousness, the research firm predicted there will be 135 per cent growth in the sector by 2009.

Around two-fifths of the companies questioned by Rhetorik said that they planned to make use of mobile VoIP by converging it with their office-based fixed lines or VoIP systems.

And further growth in the wider world of VoIP may be on the horizon with 15 per cent of respondents saying they are looking to upgrade their office communications by using IP PBX to manage and monitor their incoming and internal calls.

Companies told Rhetorik they are choosing to take up VoIP in order to take advantage of potential improvements to efficiency and reduced costs, although they also were found to have concerns over security issues, the initial costs of upgrading systems and the support services available for converged networks.
