Lindy Electronics has announced it is releasing a new VoIP phone that attaches to a PC via a USB port and can give users quick and convenient access to free internet calls.

The plug-and-play device automatically starts when plugged into the port as the VoIP software recognises the handset has been connected.

Designed to give users the familiarity and comfort of a conventional telephone, the new Lindy USB VoIP phone is aimed at enticing people who are wary of advances in technology to give VoIP a try.

It does include some more advanced features than some traditional phones, however, such as a variety of ringtones and a quick dial function.

Priced at £21.99, the stylish black and red phone is also a cheap and simple way for these technophobes to experiment with VoIP before replacing their main-line connection.

The fully wall-mountable phone is compatible with all recent Windows versions back to Windows 2000 and can make calls to other VoIP users at their PCs, as well as to traditional landlines, making it a viable alternative to a fixed line and with greatly reduced call costs.
