VoIP operator Truphone has forced T-Mobile through the courts to allows mobile users the freedom to access its service.

The mobile network provider had previously placed a block on Truphone's service which connects a call through Wi-Fi internet exchanges when there is one in range.

This move was an attempt to stop users making calls over VoIP and so escape higher call costs incurred by using the T-Mobile network, especially when calling internationally.

But in documents presented in court, Truphone labelled the practice a case of T-Mobile "abusing its dominant position" by not letting the calls go through over Wi-Fi.

Following the result of the trial, an injunction was granted against T-Mobile which now must allow access to the service.

However, Truphone still faces some challenges as Orange and Vodafone still have blocks installed on the popular Nokia N95 handset which stops users accessing the VoIP service though their networks.
