A new service has been launched by US-based firm Raketu Communications which lets users set up a VoIP number to dial another person - even if they want to call a landline.

Previously Jajah had launched a similar service, but users could only set up a call with other users of the web-based VoIP service, not connect with traditional phone lines.

"Raketu's mission is to make internet telephony both fun and accessible to everyone," said Greg Parker, chief executive of Raketu.

He claimed: "Whether you have dial-up internet access or broadband, whether you feel more comfortable downloading and interfacing with an interactive desktop application, or you only want to access your internet telephony services from a web-browser, you can do it with Raketu."

The Raketu web client does not cost a fee to call other users, but it is necessary to download an application to the PC desktop to run the service.

If a user wants to dial out of the Raketu network to mobiles or landlines, they will face a charge but it will be much reduced on international call rates.
