Digium launches PCI Express telephony expansion card

Digium is planning to release a new telephony interface kit for servers, workstations or desktops based on the PCI Express (PCIe) card format.

The card will allow users to join their computers up to a company's telephone interface and enjoy fast and reliable connections thanks to the better performance of the PCIe cards.

"PCIe is quickly becoming the industry preference for server and workstation interfaces for expansion cards," said Bill Miller, vice president of product management and marketing at Digium.

"Digium's goal in offering a full line of PCIe cards and in continuing to support PCI and PCI Extended formats, is to offer our customers and partners the widest array of choices in how they use and deploy Asterisk solutions."

Asterisk is the voice communications software originally created by Digium but has since been released to the open source development community.

Over two million servers make use of Asterisk for their VoIP communications, encompassing more than ten million people.

The new cards are aimed at improving network connectivity and increasing the ability to scale the service as a company requires, as well as providing support for internet protocol, traditional analogue and mixed telephony lines.
