Sony and BT have teamed up to extend the functions of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to include voice and video calling through VoIP.

Using Wi-Fi connectivity users will be able to make calls through the handheld console by attaching a microphone.

"The PSP is an excellent device for both gaming and communications, because of its high quality screen and audio capabilities," said BT's chief of mobility and convergence Steve Andrews.

Users will be able to connect via any ISP, but BT OpenZone will be the first public Wi-Fi provider to offer the service, although it is likely to spread wider in the future to offer the greatest number of connections.

This forms part of a four-year deal between the companies, which according to BT will see additional features added to the PSP in the next few months, including the full range of VoIP connectivity such as calls to mobiles and PCs.
