Digium, the organisation behind the first open source telephony platform, has unveiled details of a collaboration with open source data communications company Vyatta.

The two companies are to work together to provide small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) and customers with easier-to-use high-quality voice and data platforms.

As demand for such solutions increases, so the partnership will aim to meet these requirements, with efficiency and security among the priorities.

Bill Miller, vice president of marketing and business development at Digium, explained: "A partnership between Vyatta and Digium is a natural fit that will leverage our very complementary core competencies to enhance a common mission: to provide SMBs and enterprises with open-source alternatives to expensive and proprietary solutions."

Vyatta's vice president of strategy and marketing, Dave Roberts, added that he wanted open-source networking to follow in the footsteps of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) as "a mainstream technology".

In addition to making their open source platforms easy to use, the firms will also focus on improving the quality of service of their VoIP offering.
