Digium has announced that the open source VoIP application Asterisk is continuing to gain supporters and has now been embraced by more that 2 million users.

The company said that Asterisk's mature feature set and flexible open source license have led to rapidly growing adoption worldwide.

Asterisk supports a wide range of TDM protocols for the handling and transmission of voice over traditional telephony interfaces, featuring VoIP packet protocols such as SIP and IAX among others.

Examples of users that have recently deployed the technology include the University of Pennsylvania; the city of Pforzheim, Denmark; Sam Houston University; Ntegrated Solutions; the city of Schoten, Belgium; Iowa City Carousel Auto Group and Anderson Associates Architects.

Danny Windham, CEO of Digium, said: "More than 2 million users have embraced Digium's open source technology, making Asterisk one of the most successful open source initiatives to date.

"We continue to see tremendous interest in Digium solutions and ways in which Asterisk can be adapted to meet the dynamic needs of today's growing businesses."

A recent survey of 256 UK companies by research firm Business Intelligence has revealed the most common driver in adopting VoIP systems was cost savings, chosen by 53 per cent of respondents.
