BT still largest broadband provider

BT has remained the largest broadband provider in the UK, new figures from the company released yesterday (November 13th) show.

Of 258,000 net additional broadband connections in the second quarter of the financial year, the telecom giant's retail share was 27 per cent.

It had 13.3 million DSL and LLU wholesale connections as of the end of September, with 5.1 million of these local loop unbundled lines, while its customer base stands at 4.6 million.

This gave it a 34 per cent share of the DSL and LLY installed base market at the end of the quarter.

Chief executive Ian Livingstone commented: "Demand for our BT Global Services proposition remains strong, revenue grew strongly in the quarter and the pipeline is healthy.

"What we have to do now is translate revenue growth into better profitability."

It has not all been good news for the company however, after it announced that it expected to shed 10,000 jobs by the end of March 2009 to lower costs.
