Nuvoton announce new CODEC for VoIP phones

A new CODEC designed specifically for VoIP phones has been announced by Nuvoton Technology Corporation.

Called the WAU8812, the company say it is a high-performance, cost-effective mono-audio CODEC which will deliver "flexibility in performance and optimisation of power consumption".

It is the first device in the company's new line of emPowerAudio solutions.

"The WAU8812 inaugurates the emPowerAudio family, which will expand into a broad range of devices for portable audio, in-vehicle infotainment systems, and VoIP telephones," said Nuvoton vice president of marketing, Ike Saeed.

"Voice and audio system designers can look forward to a steady stream of emPowerAudio products from Nuvoton for these applications."

The device uses a 24-bit signal architecture and delivers 93dB digital-to-analogue converter signal to noise ratio (SNR) and 91dB analogue-to-digital converter SNR at audio sampling rates from 8 KHz to 48 KHz.

It operates at a six microampere standby current, which reduces power consumption and extends battery life.
