VoIP phones given emergency access in USAThe recognition of VoIP phones as a viable alternative to traditional devices has received a boost as a new bill in the USA allows VoIP users to dial the 911 emergency telephone service.

President George W Bush signed the New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act of 2008, which was brought into being after negotiations between the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Both bodies had passed separate bills earlier in the year and Senator Daniel Inouye and Senator Ted Stevens authored a compromise.

The news was welcomed by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

"We thank President Bush for signing this critical legislation into law, which will improve both the capabilities and functionality of public safety communications systems, by giving VoIP providers the tools necessary to relay accurate information to first responders in times of emergencies and natural disasters," said Grant Seiffert, TIA president.

He added that the bill would help VoIP solutions and products become more competitive.

As well the legislation for VoIP phones, the bill set out to enhance 911 services in rural areas, including allowing operators to identify the caller's location.
