IP telephony solutions market is rising

The European telephony endpoints market's growth rate is above that of European GDP, analysis from Frost & Sullivan has found.

The market earned nearly €1,300 million in 2007, and Frost & Sullivan predicts this will rise to nearly €2,200 million in 2013.

The endpoint market growth is thought to be caused by poor sales of VoIP phones compared with IP PBX bases – even though IP telephony solutions are on the rise, many businesses are opting to reuse existing phones or use softphones after upgrading their systems.

Dorota Oviedo, Frost & Sullivan research analyst, warned: "Current economic indicators, coupled with the preference for phased migration, limit market potential."

"Vendors are challenged to come up with solutions that can be used to yield business benefits not available on current investments."

A softphone is a PC program that uses VoIP and allows users to make calls without access to an actual phone.

All that is needed is the PC and a microphone and speakers – which many laptops contain internally.

The interface for the program usually looks like a normal phone.
