Investment on next-generation broadband should be 'right rather than early'Plans to develop super-fast broadband networks should be carefully coordinated by the broadband industry and government rather than hastily undertaken, according to an independent advisory body. The Broadband Stakeholders Group (BSG) claims that improving broadband speeds could generate more than the £16 billion needed to cover the cost of upgrading infrastructure. Antony Walker, chief executive of the BSG, said: "We're talking about a really big change in the industry. "Next-generation broadband has the potential to transform the way we do things. It is tempting to jump in feet first, but it matters more to do this right than to do it now." However, Mr Walker cautioned against waiting "too long" because such a delay could hinder the UK's competitiveness and productivity compared to other nations. Francesco Caio, who is reviewing the UK's internet infrastructure, recently claimed that the roll out of next-generation broadband services may have little impact on technological take up.
