Portable VoIP phone on show at Mobile World Congress

A portable voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone that uses WiMAX data communication is among the products on show at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The phone is compatible with All IP communication - including voice, IM and video - and also comes with mobile broadband capability, allowing users to access the web on the move through a WiFi connection.

It can also be used by businesses that have wireless solutions other than WiMAX, such as 3G and internal PHS, the companies said.

The phone is a joint development by Japanese technology firms NetIndex and Kaga Electronics together with Israeli WiMAX chipset manufacturer Runcom Technologies.

NetIndex is currently showcasing the phone to visitors at the Mobile World Congress in Spain, one of the largest mobile communications shows in the world.

Following the launch of the phone, NetIndex and Kaga Electronics have indicated that they may start work on a mobile broadband portable phone for the business market.

The Mobile World Congres, which features exhibitors from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, runs until February 14th.
