"Fibrecity" to bring super-fast broadband to UKA new project to bring broadband speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (mbps) to UK homes has been launched by fibre specialist H20 Networks. Under the Fibrecity scheme, a fibre network will be laid in a British city which, when used in combination with wireless, will provide unlimited connectivity and high-speed data transfer. The network would allow businesses to work from any location, with faster communication for features such as voice over internet protocol. It would also eliminate charges for bandwidth usage. Consumers, meanwhile, would be able to download even larger files within minutes and the network could pave the way for services such as on-demand high definition TV, DVD-quality film downloads and CCTV home surveillance, the BBC reports. The initial fibre network will cover 600 new houses, with a target of 10,000 homes being added to the network by 2020, it says. Bournemouth, Dundee and Northampton are the candidates to become the UK's first fibrecity, as H20 Networks already provides fibre services to their councils. Posted on: 2008-01-23, in: Broadband |
