| 2007-12-04 | More wireless frequencies up for auction |
Telecoms regulator Ofcom is planning to increase the provision of wireless internet services in the UK by auctioning off unused radio frequencies.Bands in the super-high and extremely-high bracket are to be sold off, with the watchdog suggesting that it could be used for data transfer or communications. Set to go on sale early next year, the frequencies "can carry large amounts of data over distances of up to 12 kilometres", according to Ofcom. It was suggested that this ability may appeal to "organisations seeking to share wireless internet connections across buildings in close proximity", with the service potentially supplying connection speeds of 2Gb/s. Improvements to the wireless networks in the UK a positives for the development of IP telephony, with VoIP calls benefiting from strong connections with greater reliability and improved voice and picture quality. A suggested boost to the UK-wide broadband network would allow all users to enjoy top quality free calls over the web, but businesses may be able to jump ahead by using these new wireless connections.
