| 2007-08-15 | SMEs choosing free VoIP over paid-for services |
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are showing willingness to change their telephony service to one based on voice over internet protocol (VoIP), according to one industry researcher. An upcoming study by Ovum reportedly suggests that SMEs "are keen on VoIP", but they are often choosing to use free services aimed at casual users rather than bespoke private branch exchange (PBX) systems. "The bad news for established telcos is that many small businesses are turning to...internet voice providers for their VoIP services rather than business grade solutions from telcos," a statement from Ovum said. Although SMEs understandably want to save as much money as possible on their calls, they may be missing out on the benefits of running their VoIP calls through a hosted IP PBX. This can include the ability to route calls between employees both inside and outside the office, use internet-capable mobile phones to take VoIP calls by tapping into the office network and have a system designed to fit the needs of the SME. But most importantly, bespoke PBX systems provide far greater security protection to keep sensitive business information discussed over VoIP safe from potential competitors or hackers. Recognising the extra benefits provided by paid-for VoIP services, Ovum advised providers to "play to their strengths and emphasise their superior quality of service and support capabilities, the breadth of their service offerings as well as their strong reputation in this market."
