Nokia N95 can route calls using Asterisk

The Nokia N95 has the iPhone beat on many features, including VoIP using session initiation protocol (Sip) which has upset networks like Vodafone and Orange.

This means mobile users can potentially save large amounts on their call costs by making calls at much-reduced prices over VoIP instead of the mobile phone networks.

But another feature of the new Nokia phone is that it can use VoIP both over Wi-Fi public hotspots and through home wireless networks by using the open source IP PBX from Digium called Asterisk.

Website Personal Computer World highlighted the phone's ability to make use of the system in conjunction with a PC linked up with the wireless router on which Asterisk has been installed.

By making use of the PBX, Nokia N95 owners can route their home calls to mobile VoIP or visa versa, as well as features like internal extensions and a choice of VoIP providers through broadband.

However, the IT website cautioned users that changes to the firmware to enable VoIP may be required depending on the mobile network, which may invalidate the phone's warranty.
