Free tool tests VoIP capability of business networksA free web-based tool has been launched which measures the capabilities of a business network and determines whether it fulfils the requirements for VoIP. Created by US-based VoIP system provider NeoPhonetics, the application checks the network's available bandwidth and the quality of its cabling, switches and routers in a few minutes. It is aimed at allowing businesses in the process of transferring their communications over to VoIP to see how far current systems are from what is required to run a connection both securely and reliably. The Network Assessment Tool is described by NeoPhonetics as "an educational tool developed with non-technical users in mind" and checks whether the network features a bandwidth of 80 kilobits for every call, cables which are at least 'category 5' quality and network switches which feature fully-configured to use capabilities such as Power Over Ethernet, Virtual Local Area Network and Quality of Service. NeoPhonetics claim the test takes just five minutes and it can be done on their website - which would make it simple and quick for businesses to see whether they are ready to start saving on voice calls and get improvements to efficiency through flexible working practices.
