Vyke to release work-around for VoIP-blocked mobilesVoIP specialist Vyke is set to provide an upgrade to their software which will let mobile users use VoIP even if it has been intentionally blocked by their network. The up-and-coming release of Vyke Mobile IP will be a fully-featured VoIP client application which users can download to their phone. This gets around the blocking practices of mobile networks who have increasingly tried to stop users saving on their calls by removing VoIP capabilities built into mobile handsets. "The incumbent mobile network operators must be feeling very threatened by mobile VoIP," said Kjetil Bøhn, Vyke Communications' chief executive. "In the short amount of time that this immerging technology has been in the market, they have already responded by removing VoIP capabilities from mobile handsets that they sell and by introducing very restrictive contract terms prohibiting their customers from using their networks to access services such as VoIP and third party peer-to-peer messaging clients." Vyke believes that users should be able to do whatever they like with their phone, even if this means mobile operators lose out as if their customers choose to avoid making calls over more expensive mobile connections and instead use VoIP. The mobile operator will still, of course, get revenues from the monthly fees paid by many mobile users due to the contracts they sign when buying a phone in the first place.
