Moss Bros VoIP switch 'cuts costs'

Men's fashion retailer Moss Bros replaced its old nationwide telephone infrastructure with a VoIP system and found it cut the cost of calls and streamlined the business.

The retailer upgraded to IP-based telephony at all 150 of its stores last March, setting up a virtual private network (VPN) to carry the communications on a secure connection.

And already it has seen savings of 10 per cent on calls, as well as £60,000 on the cost of its base infrastructure.

Moss Bros' IT technical project manager Dave Evans told IT Pro: "We used to have an ISDN network and looked to upgrade the infrastructure a couple of years ago when we started to replace our point-of-sale systems. When we looked at introducing new till hardware and software, it was more cost-efficient and less risky to go for an outsourcing provider."

He added that the VPN was providing substantial support for the company's expansion overseas, as well as improving procedures for in-store transactions and handling of stock through real-time sales and stock check updates.

"There's a lot more to the business benefits than just cost savings - there are fairly serious 'soft' benefits as well, around real-time visibility of the data and the network," Mr Evans said.
